ALEX FAIR THE ADVOCATE North-West Thunder coach Sam Armstrong says the opportunity to be a NBL1 All Stars assistant coach will be a big step forward in his own coaching journey.
Armstrong on Wednesday was announced as part of a coaching group that includes Hobart Huskies’ Mark Chivers and Frankston’s Andrew Harms for the matches against Brisbane Bullets at Ulverstone Sports and Recreation Centre on Thursday, September 19, at 6pm, and the Cairns Taipans at Launceston’s Silverdome on Saturday, September 21, at 5.30pm during the NBL Blitz’s time in Tasmania.
“When the situation evolved that I could potentially be part of it, it was something I was definitely interested in and I’m glad that it has been able to become a reality,” he said on Thursday.
“You look at your pathway and what I want to achieve in coaching and this is another step in the direction I want to take.
“It is great first and foremost to be able to work with a couple of coaches in the NBL1 framework and some different players and it is going to be a great challenge, but at the same time it is going to be a great learning experience.”
The team will feature one of Armstrong’s current Thunder roster in young-gun Reyne Smith, former Thunder player Lachie Barker and Hobart Huskies’ and Penguin’s Zac White to ensure there is a real Tasmanian flavour.
“Obviously there were some imports that would have been available for selection if they hadn’t had gone home early, but the NBL1 had an idea of the team they wanted to shape up, and that has come to fruition and we have been able to put a team together which we are hoping will be competitive,” he said.
“It is a great opportunity for those guys and hopefully if it is a consistent thing that happens in the future we (Tasmania) will hopefully be able to get more guys involved.
“For Reyne, this is another good experience in his basketball journey. The league was throwing names around and people from outside our club was keen to have him involved to bring some younger talent into the group and it is going to be a great experience coming off the back of his Aussie (under-17) commitments and I think it is one he will take in his stride.”
